Are you a mid-level or executive manager seeking a more grounded course of study to support your organizational shift to an anti-oppressive working philosophy?

Let me rephrase that:

As a mid-level or executive manager, you'd better be seeking a more grounded course of study for anti-oppressive leadership! The days of the mandatory half-day Cultural Competency training with a pat on the back and a "good luck and do your best out there" will no longer cut it. You are no longer allowed to check boxes, sustain White Comfort, and minimize the experiences of your Black and brown employees.

You have a responsibility to curate an equitable environment. This is your chance to get it right and sustain a culture steeped in evidence-based scholarship and applied praxis.

Yet, here you are...

Exhausted

Terrified

Stalling

Can you relate?

  • You join book clubs to learn things you never incorporate into your leadership strategy.
  • You listen to impact stories from marginalized people, empathize, and just pat yourself on the back for not being "one of those White people."
  • You hire anti-racism experts to infrequently train your staff while not creating space for sustainable solutions to counteract a climate of White Supremacy.
  • Your staff asks for an equity-informed strategy but you only lend philosophies on "niceness and forgiveness."
  • You fail at protecting your employees of color because "it's complicated."
  • You don't acknowledge the ways you actively reproduce oppressive structures everyday.
  • You sustain Whiteness at every turn yet brand yourself an "ally."

As a manager, you have convinced yourself that mitigating the distinct, low-hanging baseline examples of anti-Blackness and oppression is engaging in "the work."

But you're lying and you know it.

You are unprepared for the change your staff and culture deserves.

Being an Anti-Oppressive Bystander is about transforming the harmful culture entirely and leaving no fertile ground behind for regression.

It's time to hold yourself accountable!

What if...

  • +...you possessed the skills to command anti-oppressive change in your portfolio?
  • +...your liberatory strategies increased retention of people of color and folx of marginalized identities?
  • +...your strategy for creating systemic change within your organization became the cultural standard and positively impacted your bottom line?

"The gap between wanting to do and needing to do this work is only as dire as your commitment to equity.”

-Wanda Swan

The A.B.L.E. Institute wants to help close that gap by offering a space that allows for the unraveling of anti-oppressive and anti-racist belief systems. Together we will identify common oppressive habits, connect them to larger systemic conditioning, and dig into just why White Supremacy is everyone’s default (yes, even mine)!

We currently offer two arms of engagement:

1. The #PracticeLiberation Academy

2. The Anti-Oppressive Advocacy® Certification.

What makes me certain that this investment is worth it?

I have spent over 15 years helping people JUST LIKE YOU develop the only toolbox you will ever need to support the growth of equity!

As an anti-oppressive coach and anti-violence professional, I have been guiding other anti-violence professionals, executive leaders, mid-level managers, governmental entities, global tech companies, higher education professionals, and stay at home moms in naming the ways their personal muscle memory responses to difference are an extension of a value system rooted in oppression. Once able to make those connections, they were then able to see how these traditions and values were present in their leadership strategy and everyday life choices. And then...we were able to get down to the REAL work of change!

That’s the magic behind why I created this certification program. I knew there were people out here wanting to be better for their families, their work culture, and their personal integrity. I also knew that White Supremacy worked best when White-identified folx or White-assimilated people of color were unable to get a front row seat to the impact of the system. I wanted to disrupt the system long enough for you to understand that this conditioning is nothing more than an option being posed as a singular way of life.

It’s not, and you know better.

“I had the pleasure and benefit of working alongside Wanda for a number of years, so I have seen her powerfully connect, help, and heal others firsthand—and time and time again. Candid and brilliant, Wanda sees through the blinders, bias, and BS, both in people and in organizations. And that’s what you want! She approaches the work with both skill and talent, with candor but without meanness or harm, despite the painful, personal places anti-oppression work can and must go. Her time is worth every penny, and your team (or just yourself) will leave motivated and transformed. “

“I am profoundly grateful to have met Wanda nearly a decade ago when we became colleagues at Vanderbilt University. In our time working together -- and in the years since, as friends -- we have had many challenging conversations about oppression, patriarchy, white supremacy, the list goes on...and how they impact every part of our professional and personal lives. Through every conversation, I've found myself belly-laughing one minute and invited to re-think problematic assumptions the next. Wanda is compassionate and kind. She does not shy away from taboo subjects (critical as my work was in sexuality education!) and messy truths. She's real and cultivates a space where everyone can be real, too. Learning from and with Wanda has been transformative for me.”
