Are you stuck being a "Raggedy Brené?"

What's a Raggedy Brene? It's  profile I coined after a week of discovery calls with several White women who wanted to be coached on their Oppressive Muscle Memory (OMM). I asked them all the same final question I ask others at the end of the inquiry call, "Who do you want to be on the other side of this journey?"

Every answer--every single one--sounded like the same chain of buzzwords ripped directly from Brown's Ted Talk!

"Do all White women just wanna be Brene Brown?!"

I asked this to my team as a joke, but I think it has some merit.  I don't think all White women want to be her, but I think they want to reach this Brene-like state of being that seems to come so easily to her.

But what if I told you that it didn't come easy? What if I told you that Brene Brown, just like any other White woman out there trying their best to live an anti-oppressive life, is taking this shit one day at a time, too?

What you see and love about her is the sum of a lot of work to move from "Raggedy Brene" to "Today Brene."  Your "Today Brene" is near, but you're still a bit raggedy, friend.  Don't believe me?  Let me hold up a mirror for you:

  • You find yourself using buzzwords like “courageous vulnerability,” “joyful empathy,” and “conscious interrogation.”
  • You are a voracious reader, making sure to stay up on the latest anti-oppressive education, but you are having trouble implementing everything that you’ve learned into your daily life.
  • You are the go-to social justice expert for your family and friends but you secretly know that you’re missing some key pieces of information.
  • Your activism is well documented, but only extends as far as your current knowledge cap and you’re terrified of being asked to publicly extend yourself further.

Your “showing up for the work” is often burdened with pre-scripted answers and a case of imposter syndrome that you just can’t shake.

The reason why is simple:

You’ve collected anti-oppressive habits like Infinity Stones over the years, but you don’t have a fully actualized anti-oppressive identity.

The book clubs, t-shirts, and rallies don’t make you an anti-oppressive leader.

Of course, these things are a great start, but they don’t create a lasting change. Only building an Anti-Oppressive Identity™ will take you from a person who engages in to one who embodies lasting change.

Yes, Brené Brown is soul-stirring, but that magic didn't happen overnight.

She has not always been the "Brené Brown" we know today.

We have all been taught to sustain White Comfort, the unwritten set of rules that positions the culture of whiteness as the default. It’s something we have to actively unlearn and divest from and she’s no different.

The Brené we see today got out of her own way, outfitted her Anti-Oppressive toolbox, and lives a framework for change that matches her value system.

Yes, Brené Brown is soul-stirring, but that magic didn't happen overnight.
